I-670 Utility Bridge

Challenge:

Development of the Sprint Center and Kansas City Live entertainment district warranted the removal of the McGee Street overpass and eliminated permanent placement of utilities on the replacement overpass.

Local utilities needed a way to provide connectivity to the growing entertainment district. Additionally, due to the placement of the bridge, it would also need to accommodate several highway signs.

Solution:

In order to provide adequate utility service to the expanding area, SKW prepared contract documents for abutments for a 150′ single-span, pre-engineered truss bridge, just to the west of the McGee Street Bridge. The utility bridge is 10 feet wide and carries power and communication conduits to Kansas City’s Power and Light District. And, the bridge is above grade on each end allowing for utility worker access through a locked door.

Outcome:

SKW’s structural design team was able to develop a solution that transformed a necessary and functional piece of infrastructure into an iconic piece of Kansas City’s revitalized downtown district. The bridge was constructed in 2007 and placement was completed in 2008.

SKW continues to provide bi-annual inspections to ensure the bridge continues to power this thriving area.
